Vulture And Starving Child
This photo was taken by Kevin Carter in 1994 during the Sudan Famine. It shows a little girl crawling towards a nearby UN food camp as a vulture lands behind her. The photographer snapped the photo just before leaving to catch his plane. He later committed suicide.

Segregated Water Fountains
This was taken in North Carolina by Elliott Erwitt in 1950. Half a century later and the US now has black presidential nominee!

Buddhist Monk on Fire
He sat in the middle of a busy intersection and lit himself on fire to protest the persecution of Buddhists by South Veitnam's Ngo Dinh Diem regime. It is said that when his body was re-cremated his heart did not burn and is now considered to be holy. The sacred heart is kept in a glass chalice at Xa Loi Pagoda.

Afghan Girl
This was taken by a National Geographic photographer in 1984 at the Nasir Bagh refugee camp. She was 13 years old at the time. It became one of the magazine's most popular photo. All around the world she was known as Afghan Girl until finally in 2002 they aired a special on her after many years of trying to find her. Her name is Sharbat Gula.
