According to a study done by the U.S. Census Bureau, minorities will collectivly become the majority by 2050. Technically, non hispanic single race whites will enter the minority rankings in 2042, dropping to 46% of the population in 2050 which is down from the 66% today.
How? What? When and why? Well researchers say that,
"Part of it is a higher fertility rate for some of the minority groups, Hispanics in particular," said Dave Waddington, chief of the Census Bureau's population projection branch, which issued the report. "Those groups also tend to be more of the childbearing age. Non-Hispanic white people tend to be a little bit older."
The dramatic numbers are being attributed to the significant rise in the Hispanic population, and the bureau's projections are based on Census 2000 results and assumptions about future childbearing, mortality rates and net international migration, the bureau said.
