Somewhere in the depts of the Lavonia, Georgia's trailer parks, Raymond Daniel Thurmond, 36, kept his wife and four kids locked in their trailer for three years. Once police arrived after someone called to report on the oddities of the family and trailer, the condition and stench was so bad, it sent one officer running, throwing up in a neighboring lot and causing others to wear gas masks just to enter. The kids 9, 12, 13 and 14 have never attended school except for the 14 year old who they think went to the second grade.

How bad was the condition of the trailer?

The landlord, Medina, the first to see the repulsive conditions, found:
  • Piles of trash everywhere: 4, 5 or 6 feet high
  • Trash included - Diet Mountain Dew bottles, board games, cigarette boxes, frozen pizza boxes Piles of human hair on the kitchen floor
  • The laundry room was filled to the ceiling with trash
  • Anthills were under a mattress in the master bedroom
  • Maggots crept around the trailer
  • Roaches roamed inside the fridge

"You cannot describe the smell," she said. "It was so strong it would knock you out."
